Bawdy Suit took form in 2020 after George Floyd’s murder as the three founders Samson Night (L. Steven Taylor), P.NoNoire (Jason Powell) and Faggedy Randy (Randall Phillips) pulled together their first of many online shows, this one being an all Black showcase to celebrate and bring awareness to Juneteenth. Raising over $14,000 in 2 hours, the proceeds were split between the 20 participating performers (to aid the lost wages due to covid shut downs) as well as in donations to BLM, The Okra Project & The National Bail Fund Network. Bawdy Suit has since turned that event into an annual live celebration (Juneteenth Jump Off) featuring Black performers from Chicago and across the country at the Den Theater.
Bawdy Suit has also collaborated with the Burlesque Hall of Fame to create the Asè Scholoraship. The Asè Scholarshipb sends members of the Black Burlesque community (who otherwise could not afford to attend) to the BHoF Weekender and World Competition to gain inspiration, make new connections, participate in Workshops, and share their experiences with their local communities.
